Take Two is an immersive deep-listening night consisting of two elements: an uninterrupted, high-quality playback of a seminal album, followed by a modern-day reinterpretation by New York City’s finest musicians.
Our nineteenth edition will feature the pioneers of desert blues Tinariwen and their 2004 album Amassakoul. Hailing from the Sahara Desert region of northern Mali, the band formed in 1979 but only performed locally for two decades. Upon releasing their first album in 2001, they immediately achieved worldwide recognition for their guitar-driven, hypnotic, bluesy sound, which was unlike anything the Western world had heard before.
The live reinterpretation will be led by Nikhil P. Yerawadekar and an all-star band. This will be Nikhil's third time performing at Take Two — he never ceases to amaze us by constantly raising the bar each time. Members of this band have performed with Antibalas, Hailu Mergia, Tony Allen, Sharon Jones, Quincy Jones, David Byrne, Mark Ronson, Beck, The Roots, and many more.
> Nikhil P. Yerawadekar // guitar & keys
> Cochemea Gastelum // saxophone & flute
> David Lizmi // bass
> Yoshi Takemasa // percussion
> Aaron Johnston // drums
The location of this edition is special as we will be hosting the event at River Hill Art Residency near Kingston, NY. The artist residency sits on a 75-acre property with an amazing barn and private access to a swimming lake if you fancy a dip!
