Take Two is an immersive deep-listening night consisting of two elements: an uninterrupted, high-quality playback of a seminal album, followed by a modern-day reinterpretation by world-renowned musicians.
Our twenty-second edition features Angel Bat Dawid, a Black American composer, clarinetist, pianist, vocalist, producer, educator & DJ from Chicago, who will present a performance inspired by Nas' 2008 album Untitled (originally titled “N****r”).
An oft-forgotten album, “Untitled” deconstructed race, politics, and media in a way that foresaw an ugly future of bigotry and hate—one that developed in the United States in the years after its release.
Angel will be joined by genre-bending musical guests who you may have seen alongside Standing on the Corner and Ras G to name a few. Their performance will remind us that the past is still present while the future is full of radical hope.
> Angel Bat Dawid // clarinet, keys, vocals & electronics
> Nelson Bandela // vocals & electronics
> Clérida Eltimé // cello
> Gio Escobar // vocals, percussion & electronics
The album will be introduced through live "liner notes" by cultural worker, music writer, interviewer, and radio show host Timmhotep Aku.
Take Two will be held at Public Records in Gowanus, featuring a custom-made Ojas soundsystem.
Due to limited capacity, $25 advance tickets will be sold on a first-come-first-serve basis on Dice.
