Unheard is a music series that explores listening, curiosity, and spontaneity through collaborative improvisation. In 2025, two artists-in-residence lead three in-the-round performances throughout the year featuring rotating groups of multi-instrumentalists. From silence to the unexpected, each performance explores the moments when freedom takes form and sound takes shape.
This year’s artists-in-residence are Ami Dang and William Alexander.
Amrita "Ami" Kaur Dang is a South Asian-American vocalist, sitarist, composer and producer from Baltimore. Her sound blends elements of North Indian classical, noise/ambient electronics, beat-driven psych and experimental dance pop. The work references her hybrid identity as a first-generation South Asian-American, Sikh upbringing, and the landscapes of both Baltimore and urban India. Following artists like Ravi Shankar and Philip Glass, she aims to advance contemporary music with South Asian sounds through vocals, sitar, ragas, and sampling. She has collaborated with Animal Collective, William Cashion, James Acaster, and Thor Harris, while providing tour support for Beach House, black midi, Grimes, and more.
William Alexander is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Los Angeles, currently based in Brooklyn, with roots in Okinawa. Coming up in Los Angeles’ improvisational scene, William is widely regarded as a “musician’s musician” collaborating as a drummer and percussionist with the likes of André 3000, Connan Mockasin, Laraaji, John Carroll Kirby, Carlos Niño, Mndsgn, and Nick Hakim. His latest album, Solo, explores the intersection of bedroom folk, soul, and Brazilian Tropicália, evoking the spirit of 1970s masters like Caetano Veloso and Erasmo Carlos.
